General Rules

General Rules

1. Applicants should be registered as delegates for EM Karnataka 2019, entries for the competitions will not be considered unless the applicant has registered for the conference.
2. Applicants can apply to multiple competitions.
3. Applicants are expected to abide by the rules of EM Karnataka 2019 and violation of rules can lead to disqualification.
4. The scientific committee’s decision regarding selection will be final.
5. Submitted abstracts should be original and should not have been published or presented elsewhere prior to the conference. All submissions should fulfil appropriate ethical guidelines.
6. All data and information should be anonymized with respect to patient identification. 

Platform or Poster Presentation :
The Scientific Committee will decide based on abstracts submitted whether the delegate will present a Platform presentation or Poster presentation. Preference will be given to research papers/case series for platform presentation.

Selected abstracts will be presented in the main scientific session of the conference. Duration will be 8 minutes + 2 minutes for questions by the judges. Any extension of time will be penalized.

2. Poster Presentation:

1) Delegates will present their posters on a free-standing bulletin board. Poster dimension should be a maximum of 6ft(height) by 4ft(width) or a minimum of 4ft(height) by 3ft(width).
2) Images and figures should be professionally rendered, and materials should be clearly readable from a distance of three to four feet. No audio-visual equipment can be used.
3) Advertisements or images for which the authors do not hold proprietary rights may not be included.
4) Any sources of funding or potential conflicts of interest should be clearly indicated.
5) Participants are responsible for hanging and taking down their posters before and after the conference. Platform & Poster presentation venue with date and time will be intimated to presenting authors in advance. Absence will lead to disqualification and certificate will not be awarded. If the main author does not present and  if a surrogate presents, certificate will be in the name of person who presents if she/he is registered as a delegate for the conference.

Please ensure that the structured abstract is as complete, accurate, and clear as possible and has been approved by all authors. 

Abstracts should be max 300 words long and should include the following headings.


Research Presentations

(Completed or to be completed before conference )


Title: A short ‘running title’, of not more than 55 characters (including spaces) or 20 words, for use as a headline.

Background/Introduction: Information regarding current evidence about the topic and overall purpose and need for the research conducted.

Aims & Objectives - a clear statement of the main aim of the study and the major hypothesis tested or research question posed.

Methodology: Should contain the following study design, inclusion/exclusion criteria, exposures and outcomes measured and interventions if any.

Results - main results with (for quantitative studies) with confidence intervals and, where appropriate, the exact level of statistical significance.

Conclusions - primary conclusions and their implications, suggesting areas for further research if appropriate.


(If delegates are submitting abstracts of research projects in which analysis is not yet completed, they are expected to include proposed method of analysis i.e. statistical tests, confidence intervals etc. in the results section. Completed Results and Conclusion will be mandatory at the time of conference presentation)


Proposed Research Presentations (Methodology Paper)


Title: A short ‘running title’, of not more than 55 characters (including spaces) or 20 words, for use as a headline.

Background/Introduction: Information regarding current evidence about the topic and overall purpose and need for the research conducted.

Aims & Objectives - a clear statement of the main aim of the study and the major hypothesis tested or research question posed.

Methodology: (Should contain but may not be limited to following sub-headings)

     a) Proposed Study Design with reasons in support.

     b) Population/Sample

     c) Sample Size calculation ( Power, significance etc.) 

     d) Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria

     e) Location 

     f) Restrictions/Limiting Conditions 

     g) Sampling Technique 

     h) Procedures/Materials/ Interventions if any

     i) Variables (Exposures, outcomes and anticipated confounders) 

     j) Proposed Statistical treatment/analyses i.e. statistical tests,         confidence intervals etc.


Case Series/Case Reports


Title: A short ‘running title’, of not more than 55 characters (including spaces) or 20 words, for use as a headline.

Introduction: This consists of one or two sentences to describe the context of the case and summarize the entire article. 

Case presentation: Several sentences describe the history and results of any examinations performed. The working diagnosis and management of the case are described. 

Management and Outcome: Simply describe the course of the patient’s complaint. Where possible, make reference to any outcome measures which you used to objectively demonstrate how the patient’s condition evolved through the course of management. 

Discussion: Synthesize the foregoing subsections and explain both correlations and apparent inconsistencies. If appropriate to the case, within

Non-Research/ Literature Review (Presentation of a summary of the current state of understanding on a topic relevant to Emergency Medicine.)(Eligible for Poster only)


Title: A short ‘running title’, of not more than 55 characters (including spaces) or 20 words, for use as a headline.

Introduction: This consists of one or two sentences to describe the context of the subject presented.

Summary: Summarize the chosen sources on a specific topic. Highlight the current advances or changes in recent literature regarding the topic. 

Learning Points: A few bulleted sentences describing the lessons to be learned.


  • Abstracts do not need references.
  • Indicate the corresponding author (provide his/her full name and email address) and include all author names and institutional affiliations.
  • Last date for submission is December 31st 2018. Earlier submissions will get priority for selection.

3. EMK-CPC (Clinico-pathologic Case) Competition.

3. EMK-CPC (Clinico-pathologic Case) Competition.

Faculty from participating Institutes / hospitals are requested to submit the case for the CPC competition. Cases will be reviewed by the scientific committee and randomly allotted to participating faculty/resident. Only one case can be submitted per institute and Vis-a-Vis only one case can be solved. Prizes will be awarded to best-case submitted to the faculty and best-case solution to the resident.

Prelims will be conducted on the 19th of January 2019.
Details regarding quiz will be provided on the 19th January 2019.
The finals of the Quiz Will be conducted on 20th of January 2019.   


Teams with three participants can enter and they are not required to be from the same institute. Registration for the quiz, along with the names and institutes of the participants, to be e-mailed on
emk2019competitions@gmail.com
